object . . . RUSSIAN DOLL

Russian Dolls . . .

The Russian Dolls is also known as matryoshka doll, or babushka doll. Матрёшка was a popular female russian name, meaning mother.

Ever since I was a child I have had a deep fasination with them.
Maybe it's their beautiful exteria or the layers of design.
I remember playing with my grandma's set for hours.

A russian doll is a set of wooden dolls decreasing in size, so the smallest fits inside a larger doll, and that one fits inside a larger one still, and so on.
The first noted Set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin.
Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a Sarafan, a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. Now a days you see them either dressed like this or covered with flower patterns.
The dolls inside can be either male or female and they do not seem to follow a trend.
However all if not most of the Russian Dolls i have ever seem are all female dressed very similar.
Most of the Dolls have themes either fairy tale or Soviet Leaders.

Russian Dolls are now used as a sort of gimic sold as suveniers.

The Russian Dolls had to be made from Lime Wood, the logs were stripped and aired for two years before use. The artist would work over the doll at least fifteen times before it was ready to be painted with watercolours.
The design and colour of the 'Kokosnik' (headdress) is the most important point of the Dolls, they were meant to be painted and designed as the changing feature.

TATOOS:

I'm drawing up some ideas of my own to get a tatoo on my foot. Here's some I already like.

Name: Mariana Souza
Age: 32
Occupation: Esthetician
Age of first tattoo: 14 or 15
Favorite tattoo: That's a very hard question...I love them all. If I had to pick it would be my Matryoshka doll.
Featured tattoo/location: Matryoshka Doll on my forearm.
Artist/shop/location of featured tattoo: Dan Pryor @ Seven Seas Tattoo, San Diego  CA. (Dan is the man!)
1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

I've always loved Russian nesting dolls. My mom had one when I was little and I loved it. Later on I became very obsessed with them and collecting everything I could find with the Matryoshka in it. I bought a book about them and that was when I had the idea of the tattoo. I talked to my artist, Dan, gave him a few pictures and he came up with the perfect little doll!

"heres a little russian doll i tattooed in a sort of wierd position on the forearm to match a tattoo on the same position on the other arm......it was fun!"

  • MATRIOSHKA
    GOLDEN  DOLLS
  • Matrioshka doll is a Russian nesting doll.
The form of matrioshka doll is usually cylindrical, with a roundedtop for the head,
tapering toward the bottom, with little or no protruding features; the dolls have no hands.
The wood that is used for matrioshka production is only lime tree. The true artistry is in
the painting of each doll, which can be extremely elaborate. The theme is usually
peasant girls in traditional dress, but can be almost anything.

This hand made desing version. It is the transformation of the
    actual metaphorical form.

The Russian Doll or Matryoshka Doll, with its multilayer structure, is a great canvas for telling a story orconveying a message in sequence. It was used as a canvas for designers to express their ideas, thoughts and views on the subject of Man and God and the existential quest.

Man&God is a project by Art4Soul. It seeks to explore
the relationship between Man and God through the eyes and ideas of creative minds of different faiths and various cultures. It re-examines the ancient questions of God in a new way at a crucial time.

Below are the some collections on Russian Dolls designed by 3nitydesign and also designers from all over the country. It has been traveling around the world along with Man And God Exhibitions.

MatrioskasThis work came as a sequence of the illustration class, in which it should be a work of quotation of what should be, for us, a classic.Addicted to patters, typography and. more recently. designer toys, I've combined it all in one unique object. Starting from photographies of tiles in Oporto, I have recreated these patterns with typography and assembled them in three woodcutten matrioskas. Personal classics: Matrioskas and patterned tiles.

Valenteeny tiny
A nested Valentine, loosely inspired by Russian dolls
I love handmade Valentines - it's something of a tradition for me, and an ongoing challenge each year to come up with something quirky, lovely and new. This is my creation for 2011 - a set of cards within cards with paper-cut typography and a secret note from a mystery admirer inside. Obviously, posting it on the internet spoils the mystery somewhat...

  • Persepolis
    Movie Invitation
  • I started a small French Film Club for fellow students of the European Academy in Guatemala City. The objective of the club was to watch French films while gaining insight in French culture as well as practicing our ear for the French language. I am quite passionate about languages, design, and movies, so I was excited to make creative invitations for the viewings. The invitation to Persepolis has been my favorite to date. Persepolis is an animated film about the transformation of Marjane Satrapi from a young girl in Iran to a young adult in Austria followed by her attempted reintegration into Iranian society. I used an Arab geometry background and a Russian nesting doll motif to represent the stages Marjane goes through in her coming-of-age tale. Each character is drawn based on scenes from the movie.
